What is an otome game?
Otome (乙女) means "maiden," so an otome game is literally a "maiden game." In most of them you play one female lead and choose dialogue or actions that change how each love interest feels about you. Clearing a character's route usually means reaching his good ending, and many games have bad endings too. Some add stat-raising, minigames or dates on top of the story (Wikipedia).
The genre is generally traced to Angelique, made by Koei's all-woman Ruby Party team for the Super Famicom in 1994. It was meant for younger teen girls and turned out to be popular with women in their late teens and twenties. The first Japanese otome game officially sold in English was Yo-Jin-Bo, on PC in 2006 (Wikipedia).
A few words you'll see in otome reviews:
- Route: one love interest's storyline. Most games have four to seven.
- CG: a full-screen illustration that unlocks at a key moment.
- Fan disc: a follow-up with extra stories after the endings.
- Otomate: Idea Factory's otome brand, behind many of the games that Aksys Games brings to English.
Best otome games on Switch and PC
These are the English releases most otome players start with. All of them are paid, written visual novels with multiple routes and endings.

Code: Realize Guardian of Rebirth. The heroine, Cardia, carries a poison that rots or melts anything her skin touches, and the cast is drawn from literary and historical figures in a steampunk world. Aksys published it in English on PS Vita in 2015, then on PS4 in 2018 and Switch in 2020 (Wikipedia). It's a common first recommendation because the main plot holds up even if romance isn't your only reason to play.
Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds. You play Chizuru, a girl searching for her missing father in 19th-century Japan, and fall in with the samurai of the Shinsengumi. The Steam page promises branching storylines and 30 endings, and its content note warns of sword violence and blood (Steam). The story continues in Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms, also $9.99 (Steam).
Amnesia: Memories. You wake up with no memories and have to hide it from the people around you. You choose from five romantic paths, each set in its own world, with more than 20 endings (Steam). At $9.99 it's one of the cheapest ways to try a full Otomate game on PC.
Collar x Malice. Rookie police officer Ichika Hoshino has a poison collar locked around her neck and has to investigate the X-Day Incident alongside former officers. Wikipedia notes that this kind of suspense is rare in otome games. Aksys released it in English in 2017, and on Switch in 2020 (Wikipedia).
Piofiore: Fated Memories. In 1925 southern Italy, Liliana Adornato, raised at a church, gets tangled up with the town's three crime families: Falzone, Visconti and Lao-Shu. The English version came out on Switch in 2020 (Wikipedia).
Bustafellows. You play a journalist who can leap briefly into the past in other people's bodies, and you use it to try to stop a lawyer's murder. There are five love interests, each with a side story, and a full Japanese voice cast (Steam).

Love and Deepspace. It's the big-budget pick: a 3D game where you play a customizable Deepspace Hunter fighting alien Wanderers in Linkon City beside your love interests. It passed 10 million downloads three days after its global launch on January 18, 2024 (Wikipedia). It's free-to-play with a gacha system, and the App Store lists packs from $0.49 to $27.99 (App Store).
Games like Mystic Messenger
Mystic Messenger fans usually want the same feeling: characters who text and call you as if they're on your phone. These games have that, or come from the same studio.

Tears of Themis. You play a rookie defense attorney who investigates crime scenes in 3D and argues cases, with four male leads (Wikipedia). The App Store listing promises "personal video calls" and notes that it contains loot boxes (App Store).
A Date with Death. It's the closest free match on PC. A strange program appears on your computer, and the Grim Reaper says he has come for your soul. You make a week-long bet with him and talk to him through text and video calls. You design your own character, pronouns included. It has more than 15,000 reviews on Steam, rated Overwhelmingly Positive (Steam).
Dandelion and Nameless. These are Cheritz's earlier PC games. In Dandelion (2012), Heejung moves out of her mother's house to find her own dream life (Steam). Nameless (2013) follows a lonely high school student who collects ball-jointed dolls, and its Steam page puts the playtime at about 40 hours (Steam). They play like traditional visual novels, not messenger games, but the writing and art come from the same studio.
Fantasy otome games

Late night in an academy archive, drawn in Solenne's art style.
Witches, wonderlands, vampires and cursed kingdoms. Two of these four are free.

even if TEMPEST. In a world of witch trials, Anastasia is burned at the stake as a witch and gains the "Fatal Rewind," the power to go back in time through death (Steam). It came out on Switch in 2022 (Siliconera) and on Steam in September 2026. It's the darkest game here: the Steam page warns of intense violence, sexual assault, suicide and self-harm.
Ikemen Revolution. You chase a gentleman who looks a lot like a white rabbit and end up in a land where magic beats reason, caught between the Red and Black royal armies. There are 14 love interests, 5 free Chapter Tickets a day, and the App Store rates it 16+ (App Store).

Free otome games on PC
Besides A Date with Death, Cinderella Phenomenon and Ballads at Midnight above, these two are free on Steam.
| Game | Platforms | Price | Developer | Year | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Our Life: Beginnings & Always | PC (Steam) | Free | GB Patch Games | 2020 | A slow, wholesome life with the boy next door |
| The Princess of the Tower Wants a Hero | PC (Steam) | Free | Anta | 2022 | Short, funny winter romance |
Our Life: Beginnings & Always. You design your own character and grow up next door to a lonely boy, from childhood to adulthood across four periods of life. The Steam page calls it near-fully customizable and a "feel-good simulation" (Steam). Because you can make the main character anyone, some players file it under romance visual novels instead of otome.
The Princess of the Tower Wants a Hero. Princess Lumi is stuck in a demon lord's castle in a land of endless winter, and instead of a hero she gets a tone-deaf bard for a roommate and a sassy demon for a butler. It's about 20,000 words with one romance route, so you can finish it in an evening (Steam).
For more free otome games, the Otome tag on itch.io lists many more indie games and game-jam entries. Read each page first: some are demos, and some put the full game behind a minimum price.
AI otome games

After a practice duel. Kael and Ines keep the same faces from scene to scene.
Searches for "AI otome games" and "AI shoujo games" usually mean one of two things: an AI character chat app, or an AI story game. Both answer anything you type, so the story can go places no writer planned. That's the appeal.
What you give up is everything a written otome game is built around. There are no hand-written routes, no endings to collect, no affection meter, no voice cast and no CG gallery. How good the story feels depends on the AI and on how you play. Many AI romance apps are also chat windows with a portrait, with no world around the character.
Mythx, the AI roleplay game we make, is closer to the second kind. You arrive in a world where the AI plays everyone you meet, and each person keeps the same face in every picture. The two settings closest to otome are Hoshimori, a Japanese hillside academy, and Solenne, a magic academy beside the palace with ranked duels, where Kael Ashgrave, a duke's cold heir, sits at the top of the rankings. Slow-burn feelings can happen, but nothing is scripted, and it's filtered, with no mature content. Free players get 10 scenes a day. The arrival scene and 3 bonus pictures are illustrated, and after that the story continues in text unless you go Premium. It's free to start in your browser with no sign-up.
If you want the character types otome games are built on, our dere types guide covers the tsundere, kuudere and the rest. Want to be the villainess who knows every route? The villainess isekai is a whole subgenre about exactly that. For scenes to play with a friend or an AI, try the romance roleplay ideas.
