What makes a good fantasy name

A fantasy name has to do two jobs at once: sound like it belongs to another world, and be easy for your readers or players to say. The trick is to start from real-world sounds and bend them. Ferrick, Maren and Tamsin are close enough to names we know that they are easy to remember, and different enough to feel at home in a kingdom that never existed.

Surnames carry most of the world-building. A family name made from a trade (Cooper, Fletcher), a place (Ashdown, Rookwood) or a feature of the land (Hollowbrook, Greyfell) tells the reader where the character comes from before they do anything.

Elf, dwarf and human names

Each fantasy people has its own sound. Elf names are soft and vowel-rich, with surnames from nature and starlight (Silverleaf, Moonbrook). Dwarf names are short and hard, with clan names of stone and metal (Stonehaft, Ironvale). Medieval human names are plain given names with a surname from a trade or a parent (Nell Baker, Roland Cooper). Pick the style above, or keep "Any fantasy race" for a mix.

For a specific species or role, the name generators below go deeper: tiefling virtue names, drow house names, warlock epithets, NPC names your table can say, and more.

How to choose a name

Say it aloud in a sentence. Check that it does not share a first letter with another main character, so readers never mix them up. And give it a meaning you like: the list below says what every name evokes, so the name can quietly support the character you are building.

How this name generator works

Each roll asks an AI for ten original names in this style, written to fit your description if you give one, with what each name means or evokes, how to say it, and who it suits. Invented names get the image they call up rather than a made-up etymology; real names get their commonly cited meaning. The lists above were written the same way and checked by hand, and names borrowed from famous books, games and anime were removed. Need a story to go with the name? The backstory generator writes one, and our 160 OC ideas are a place to start.

Fantasy Character Name Generator FAQ

Pick a style (any fantasy race, elf, dwarf or human) and a gender, and optionally describe your character. An AI writes ten original names in about five seconds, each with what it means or evokes, how to pronounce it, and who it suits.

A good fantasy name is easy to say, sounds like it belongs to its world, and hints at the character. Start from a real-world sound and bend it (Ferrick, Maren), then add a surname from a trade, a place or the land, like Ashdown or Hollowbrook.
