What makes a title stick

Most weak titles are weak in the same way: they could belong to a hundred books. "Shadows of the Kingdom" promises nothing in particular. "Postmarked Tomorrow" promises one story, a letter that should not exist yet, and makes you want to know who sent it. A good title is a small hook, not a label.

That is what this story title generator writes for, ten titles at a time:

  • Different angles. A place, an object, a character, a line someone says, a question or a contrast. Each set mixes them, so you can see which kind of title suits your story.
  • A promise you can check. Every title comes with a note on the story it promises a reader. If the note does not sound like your book, neither does the title.
  • No stock words. The generator steers away from the words every shelf is full of: Shadows of, Echoes of, The Last, Rise of, Legacy.
  • The right shape for the format. Short and sayable for a novel, odder for a short story, a whole premise in one breath for a light novel, a lyric or a line of dialogue for a fanfic, and one specific moment per chapter.

How to pick one of the ten

Say them out loud. A reader will recommend your book by saying its title, so it has to be easy to say. Cross off any you stumble on. Picture the cover. Keep the two or three that look right on the spine next to the books you would shelve it with. Search it. Titles usually are not protected by copyright, but you do not want to share one with a famous book. Change one word. The best title is often a generated one with a single word swapped for something only your story has.

Still working out the story itself? The plot generator writes a full outline from a one-line idea, and our 200 writing prompts and 100 story ideas with a twist are full of premises waiting for a title.

Story title generator FAQ

Describe your story in a line, or leave it blank, then pick a genre and a style: novel, short story, light novel, fanfic or chapter titles. An AI writes ten original titles in about five seconds, each with a note on the story it promises and the angle it uses, such as a place, an object or a line of dialogue.

Yes. It is free and needs no sign-up. Each visitor can generate a few dozen sets of titles an hour; past that, the tool shows titles from our example library until the limit resets.

Start from something specific inside the story: a place, an object that matters, a line a character says, or a contrast at its heart. Write ten options, say each one aloud, and keep the one that makes you curious about this story and no other. If you are stuck, describe your premise to the generator and use its ten as a starting list.

A good title is short enough to remember, easy to say, and specific enough to promise one story. It fits the shelf it will sit on, so a thriller sounds urgent and a romance sounds personal, and it avoids words every other book in the genre already uses.

Yes. Titles generally cannot be copyrighted, and every title here is written fresh for you. Before you publish, search the title in bookstores and online to make sure a well-known book or series does not already use it.

Pick the style Chapter titles and describe your story. The generator writes ten chapter titles in reading order, each naming one specific moment, with a note on what happens in that chapter. Many writers use a key image or a line of dialogue from the chapter rather than a summary.
