How to keep a romance roleplay slow
Most romance roleplays rush the confession and then run out of story. A few habits keep the pull going.
- Make the obstacle real. Every idea above has something in the way, like a contract, a rival or a curse. Let it win sometimes.
- Give each character a want outside the romance. The violinist wants the first chair and the duke wants his mother to stop. A character with no other goal has nothing to give up.
- Use small gestures before big ones. A coffee in the right order, a lamp lit last, a sticky note. The reader notices the small things first.
- Interrupt the big moment. A knock, a phone call, a sibling in the doorway. Then let the characters think about what almost happened.
- Talk out of character. With a human partner, agree on pace and limits before you start, and check in between scenes. With a stranger online, set the content rating first.
For the characters themselves, the dere types guide covers the tsundere, kuudere and other personalities romance stories borrow from anime. The OC ideas list has characters you can drop into any of these setups.

Romance roleplay FAQ
What is a good romantic roleplay idea? One with two characters who want something, and a reason they can't simply have each other. "You're a governess, he's a duke, and you've signed a contract banning feelings" works because the contract is in the way.
What are the most popular romance tropes for roleplay? Enemies to lovers, fake dating, forced proximity, slow burn and arranged marriage come up most. They each build in an obstacle, which gives both players something to push against.
How do you start a romance roleplay? Start in the middle of a scene where the two characters have to talk, like a shared train berth or a noise complaint. Open with a line of dialogue, not a summary of how they met.
How do you keep a romance roleplay SFW? Agree on a rating before you start, and fade to black or cut to the next morning when a scene goes further. Most of the tension in romance comes before anything happens.
Can I do a romance roleplay with AI? Yes. General chatbots can play a partner if you set the scene in your first message. In Mythx, the residents of each world can become friends or more over time, within its SFW filter.
