How to fill in a character profile

A profile is not a form to finish. It is a set of questions that make you decide things about your character before the story decides them for you. Forty answers about eye color and favorite food will not make a character feel alive. Five honest answers about what they want and what they hide will.

  • Start at the end. Fill in Goals and fears first: what they want, what they really need, and what stands in the way. Everything else should explain those answers.
  • Give them a flaw that costs something. A flaw only counts if it gets them into trouble. Our list of 165 character traits and 30 flaws helps when you are stuck on a word.
  • Be specific. "Carries a stopped pocket watch" tells you more than "mysterious". One concrete detail per answer is enough.
  • Let them contradict themselves. A kind person who lies, a coward who would die for one friend. Contradictions are where scenes come from.
  • Leave blanks. Skip any question that does not matter for your story. A printed blank prints as writing lines, so you can come back to it by hand.

Character profile, character sheet or OC template?

They overlap. A character profile is the writer's version: personality, history, relationships and goals. A character sheet in tabletop games like D&D tracks the numbers, such as stats, skills and hit points; use your game's official sheet for those and this profile for the person behind them. An OC template is the version shared in fandom and art communities to introduce an original character. This template covers all three: fill it in, then copy the text into Toyhouse, a Discord post or a Google Doc.

Where to take your character next

Need a character to start from? Our 160 OC ideas each come with a look and a hook, and the character archetypes guide shows the roles a character can play in a story. For the personality section, the character personality generator drafts strengths, flaws, habits and a voice to edit. For the background section, the AI backstory generator turns your answers into a full history with a secret and story hooks, and the character name generator helps if the first box is still empty.

Character profile template FAQ

The basics (name, age, role, where they come from), appearance, personality with strengths and flaws, background and the event that changed them, the people in their life, and what they want, need and fear. This template has 40 questions in seven sections; fill the ones that matter for your story and skip the rest.

Start with Goals and fears: what the character wants, what they really need, and what stands in their way. Then give them a flaw that causes trouble and a secret. Appearance and likes come last. Specific answers beat general ones: "carries a stopped pocket watch" tells you more than "mysterious".

An OC (original character) template is a list of questions for building your own character, often shared on Toyhouse, Tumblr, Discord or art communities. This character profile template works as an OC template: fill it in here, then copy the text or download it to paste wherever you post your OC.

Yes. Press Print to get a clean black-and-white sheet. Questions you answered print with your answers, and blank questions print with writing lines, so printing the empty template gives you a paper form to fill in by hand.

A character profile describes who someone is: personality, history, relationships and goals. A character sheet in tabletop games like D&D tracks game numbers such as stats, skills and hit points. Many players use both: the sheet for the rules and a profile for the person behind it.
