How Japanese names work

A Japanese name has a family name and a given name. In Japan the family name comes first (Tanaka Aoi); in English the order is usually flipped (Aoi Tanaka), which is how this generator writes the romaji. The kanji line keeps the same order as the romaji, so you can read them side by side.

Most family names describe a place: Yamamoto is "base of the mountain", Ishikawa "stone river", Nakamura "middle village". Given names carry wishes or images instead: Haruka "distant", Daichi "great earth", Kaede "maple". The same sound can be written with different kanji, and each spelling changes the meaning, so a name like Yuto can be "leisurely" or "gentle" depending on how it is written.

Girl, boy and unisex names

Endings give a rough sense of gender. Names ending in -ko, -mi, -ka and -na lean feminine (Hinako, Nanami, Ayaka, Hina). Names ending in -to, -ta, -ki and -suke lean masculine (Haruto, Sota, Daiki, Sousuke). Names like Aoi, Rin, Sora, Kaoru and Hinata are used for anyone, which makes them popular for characters whose gender the story reveals later.

Popular names change by decade, too. Ren, Haruto and Himari top recent baby name lists, while names like Osamu, Kazuko and Akiko feel like a grandparent. Pick by the age of your character, not only the sound.

Using a Japanese name in your story

If your story is set in Japan, give the family name a place that fits where the family comes from, and use it the way people there would: classmates and coworkers say the family name, friends and family say the given name. For a game or anime-style story, the kanji is part of the character, so choose a meaning that hints at who they are. Our anime name generator leans more toward striking, story-ready names.

How this name generator works

Each roll asks an AI for ten original names in this style, written to fit your description if you give one, with what each name means or evokes, how to say it, and who it suits. Invented names get the image they call up rather than a made-up etymology; real names get their commonly cited meaning. The lists above were written the same way and checked by hand, and names borrowed from famous books, games and anime were removed. Need a story to go with the name? The backstory generator writes one, and our 160 OC ideas are a place to start.

Yes. The generator writes names a person in Japan could really have, with common kanji and standard readings, and our reviewed list was checked for real surnames and correct meanings. Kanji can be read several ways, so if a name matters, check it with a native speaker.

Aoi (hollyhock), Rin (dignified), Sora (sky), Kaoru (fragrance), Hinata (facing the sun), Haru (spring or sunshine) and Nao (honest) are all used for any gender. Pick Neutral above for a full set.

Yes. Use them in campaigns, novels, roleplay and streams, and change them as you like. The names are invented for you rather than taken from published books or games, but search a name before you publish it in case someone already uses it.
