Example

Tick Step

The user can step to any spot they would have occupied within the last three seconds.

A faint clock-hand shadow sweeps across the user's body, then they blur and reappear at an earlier position.

How it works

  • The user rewinds their own position to where it was exactly one, two, or three seconds ago, keeping their current orientation and injuries.
  • This works only if the old spot is within 15 meters and is not occupied by a solid object or another person.
  • It cannot undo anyone else's movement, change the past beyond the user's own location, or be used more than once every five seconds.
Weakness
The user cannot rewind into a space they have not physically occupied, so an opponent who keeps them moving in new directions traps them.
Cost
Each step makes the user's short-term memory fuzzy, and three steps in a minute leaves them unable to recall the last few minutes at all.

Moves

  1. 1

Door Rewind. The user steps through a doorway, then rewinds to the other side, making it look like they passed through a wall.

  2. 2

Three Count. By stepping backward along their own path three times, the user appears to stand still while actually dodging a slow projectile.

  3. 3

Dead End Drop. The user deliberately walks into a dead end, then rewinds to the entrance, leaving a pursuer to search an empty corridor.

Origin

They were standing in line at a busy coffee shop, idly watching the second hand on the wall clock. When the barista called an order, they stepped forward and suddenly found themselves back at the door, coat still in hand, with no memory of the last three seconds. The line had not moved, but everyone was staring.

What makes a superpower worth writing

"Super strength" and "controls fire" are not powers yet. They are categories. A power you can build scenes around says exactly what it does, how far it reaches, how long it lasts and what it cannot touch. "She can step to any spot she stood in during the last three seconds, within 15 meters" tells you how she escapes a locked room, why she hates open fields and how a smart villain would beat her.

That is what this superpower generator writes for, every time:

  • Exact rules. Three short rules: how it works, its range or duration, and what it cannot do.
  • A weakness. Something a clever opponent could learn and use, so fights turn on wits, not on who hits harder.
  • A cost. Using the power takes something from the hero: balance, memory, a sense, their strength. Every use becomes a choice.
  • Three named moves. Clever uses that follow from the rules, from a simple one to a surprising one, with no new powers sneaking in.
  • An origin. The ordinary or frightening moment the power first appeared, ready to open your story.

Random or built around your character

Leave the box empty for a random superpower, or type a line about your character, such as "a retired firefighter" or "a shy barista who hates conflict". The power, its cost and its origin are then built around who they are. The theme menu steers the kind of power: elemental, body, mind, space and time, or conceptual powers that work on ideas like debts, promises and luck.

Three mistakes that make a power boring

  • No limit. If the power can solve every problem, no problem matters. Give it a range, a time limit or a list of things it cannot affect.
  • No price. A power that costs nothing gets used every scene. A lost sense or a pounding headache makes the hero think before they act.
  • Too many powers in one. Flight plus strength plus healing is a list, not a character. One specific power with clever uses is easier to write and more fun to read.

Using your superpower

For comics and novels: the weakness is your plot. Decide who knows about it, and you have your villain's plan. Our guide to character archetypes helps you decide whether this power belongs to a hero, a mentor or a rival.

For OCs and roleplay: pair the power with a past. The backstory generator writes one, and our 160 OC ideas give you a character to start from. Writing anime instead of comics? Try the quirk generator, cursed technique generator or stand generator.

Ferro Bond

Attract or repel metal objects with magnetic gloves, at a cost to the user's strength.

The user's gloves glow with a faint blue magnetic field, and metal objects tremble before flying toward or away from their hands.

How it works

  • By focusing on a metal object within 10 meters, the user can pull it toward their palm or push it away at up to 20 meters per second.
  • The effect lasts for 3 seconds per use, after which the gloves need 5 seconds to recharge.
  • It cannot affect non-metal objects, and it cannot affect metal that is heavier than the user can lift with their own arms.
Weakness
The gloves run on the user's own stamina, so prolonged use leaves them exhausted and weak, making them vulnerable to physical attacks.
Cost
Each use drains the user's physical energy, causing muscle fatigue and temporary loss of grip strength.

Moves

  1. 1

Magnetic Disarm. The user yanks a weapon from an enemy's hand by attracting the metal in it toward their own glove.

  2. 2

Repulse Shield. The user pushes away incoming metal projectiles, such as bullets or knives, by repelling them before they hit.

  3. 3

Iron Rail. The user attracts a metal object to their hand and then repels it at high speed in a different direction, effectively launching it as a projectile.

Origin

They were cooking dinner in a small apartment kitchen when a dropped cast-iron pan flew into their outstretched hand instead of hitting the floor. The pan stuck to their palm as if glued, and they felt a strange tug in their muscles. From that day, they could not ignore the pull of metal around them.

Steeped Motion

Can pause any moving object by touching it with a freshly steeped tea bag.

A faint amber glow spreads from the tea bag, and the object freezes mid-motion as if held in thick syrup.

How it works

  • The user must press a wet, unused tea bag against a moving object for one full second to stop it entirely; the bag must be steeped in hot water within the last two minutes.
  • The object stays frozen for up to fifteen seconds, and the user can freeze only one object at a time, up to the size of a small car.
  • It cannot affect living creatures, liquids, or anything already at rest, and the tea bag must be replaced after each use.
Weakness
The power fails if the tea bag is dry, cold, or older than two minutes, so an opponent who knocks the user's thermos away or waits out the time limit can move freely.
Cost
Each use drains the user's sense of balance for five minutes, making them stumble and dizzy, and three uses in an hour cause temporary blurred vision.

Moves

  1. 1

Scald Stop. Freeze a thrown knife or bullet in midair by tagging it with a tea bag, then step aside as it drops.

  2. 2

Brew Trap. Soak a doorway with hot tea, then press a fresh bag to the puddle so an approaching enemy's foot sticks fast for fifteen seconds.

  3. 3

Second Steep. Reuse an already steeped bag on a second object within the same two-minute window, but only if the first object is still frozen.

Origin

They were working a quiet afternoon shift at a tea shop, carrying a tray of samples across a wet floor. A customer's ceramic cup slipped from the counter, and without thinking they slapped a dripping tea bag against its side. The cup hung in the air, steaming and motionless, until the timer on the wall ticked past fifteen seconds and it shattered on the tiles.

Mirror Twin

Create a duplicate of yourself that swaps places with you when hit, but only one exists at a time.

A shimmering, silver copy of the user steps out of any mirror surface and syncs movements with them.

How it works

  • The user touches a mirror or reflective surface and a solid double steps out, linked to the user's movements within one meter.
  • The double lasts up to ten seconds or until it takes a hit, which instantly teleports the user to the double's spot while the double shatters like glass.
  • It cannot copy powers, speak, or exist in two places at once, and the user must stay within thirty meters of the double.
Weakness
If the double is destroyed when no reflective surface is within thirty meters, the user is yanked to that spot and left disoriented for several seconds.
Cost
Each use blurs the user's vision for a minute, and three uses in an hour makes them see mirror-images of everything.

Moves

  1. 1

Glass Feint. The user sends the double charging forward to draw fire, then swaps into its place when it's hit, appearing behind the attacker.

  2. 2

Shard Relay. By bouncing between two mirrors placed thirty meters apart, the user can cross the gap in two rapid swaps, leaving the double behind as a decoy.

  3. 3

Silver Echo. The user lets the double take a hit from a projectile, then teleports to the double's position so the projectile's own momentum carries the user into a new angle.

Origin

They were fixing their hair in a cracked bathroom mirror after a late shift, and their reflection stepped out a half-second late, already reaching for the light switch. By the time the real hand touched it, the double was gone, and their eyes had gone fuzzy for the rest of the night.

Yeastbound

The user commands bread to soften, harden, or lift, turning ordinary loaves into tools.

The user's hands glow a warm amber, and any bread they touch swells slightly as if breathing.

How it works

  • They can reshape, harden, or levitate any bread they have touched within the last hour, up to 15 meters away and for up to 10 minutes.
  • The power only works on baked dough, not on raw flour, batter, or non-bread foods.
  • They cannot affect bread that is sealed inside airtight packaging or entirely covered in mold.
Weakness
If the bread dries out completely or is soaked in liquid, it crumbles and the power ends instantly.
Cost
Each use drains their energy, leaving them dizzy and ravenously hungry for hours afterward.

Moves

  1. 1

Crumb Shield. They flatten a loaf into a stiff, curved plank that can block a thrown object or a punch.

  2. 2

Rye Snare. A baguette unravels into long, sticky strands that wrap around an enemy's ankles and hold them for a few seconds.

  3. 3

Sourdough Step. They harden a slice under their foot into a springy platform, letting them leap to a rooftop or across a gap.

Origin

They were closing the bakery alone, wiping down the counter, when a dropped sourdough loaf rolled toward a rattling back door. Without thinking, they flicked their wrist to push it away, and the loaf slid itself back into the bread bin. They stared at their hands, then at the bin, then at the door, which had stopped rattling.

Ashen Draw

Turns playing cards into floating barriers that absorb heat and force, then can be shuffled and redealt as concussive bursts.

The cards hover in a slow spiral around the user, their faces glowing with a dull ember light.

How it works

  • The user holds a standard 52-card deck and can will any card within 10 meters to rise and orbit them, each card acting as a palm-sized shield that absorbs one hit of heat or kinetic force before curling black and dropping.
  • Absorbed force is stored in the deck; the user can then redeal stored cards as short bursts of concussive air that travel up to 15 meters and hit with the strength of the absorbed impact.
  • The power cannot create new cards, cannot affect anything outside the 10-meter orbit, and cannot store more than three hits at once, after which the oldest card crumbles to ash.
Weakness
An opponent can bait the user into absorbing a weak hit, forcing an early crumble, or can destroy the deck itself, which leaves the user with no cards and no power.
Cost
Each absorbed hit drains the user's stamina and sense of smell, and after five absorptions in a minute they lose the memory of the last hour.

Moves

  1. 1

Ember Fan. The user spreads five cards in a fan to block a flamethrower or explosive blast, then snaps them together to release the stored heat as a narrow jet of hot air.

  2. 2

Shuffle Step. By flicking a card under their feet and absorbing its fall, the user leaps 5 meters sideways or upward without injury.

  3. 3

Ace Return. The user deliberately lets an enemy strike a single ace, storing the full force, then deals it as a point-blank concussive burst that throws the attacker back.

Origin

They were sorting a battered deck at their kitchen table, the same cards they had carried in their turnout coat for twenty years. When a dropped card drifted up and hung in the air, they reached for it and felt the old heat of a hundred fires pass through their fingers.

Railstep

A user steps on any metal rail or ladder to become lightning-fast for one stride.

Their foot meets metal and blue-white sparks crackle up their leg as they blur forward.

How it works

  • The user must plant one foot on a continuous metal path, rail, or ladder rung at least two inches wide; they then move in a straight line at roughly the speed of a city train for one second.
  • The effect ends after 30 meters or when the metal ends, whichever comes first, and they cannot steer mid-stride.
  • It cannot affect nonmetal surfaces, cannot be used on loose or broken metal, and cannot carry another person along.
Weakness
An opponent can break or insulate the metal path ahead, leaving the user stranded at the end of their stride.
Cost
Each use drains the user's sense of balance for several minutes, making their next steps wobble.

Moves

  1. 1

Platform Skip. They chain short bursts across subway platform edges to cross a station almost instantly.

  2. 2

Rail Fence. They drag a bare copper cable along metal fence posts to create a makeshift conductor for a longer ride.

  3. 3

Bolt Rebound. They aim at a curved rail so their straight stride carries them through a turn they could not normally make.

Origin

They were carrying groceries home when a storm cut the power, and the only dry route was a rusted fire ladder. Their first step on the bottom rung threw them up three flights in a blink, groceries tumbling behind them.

Superpower generator FAQ

Describe your character in a line, or leave it blank for a random power, and pick a theme if you want one. An AI writes an original superpower in about five seconds: its name, how it works, its range and limits, a weakness, what it costs the user, three named moves and the moment it first appeared.

Yes. It is free and needs no sign-up. Each visitor can roll a few dozen powers an hour; past that, the tool shows powers from our example library until the limit resets.

There is no official list, but in stories the memorable powers are the specific ones, not the biggest. Rewinding your position by three seconds or pausing anything you touch with a tea bag is rarer, and more fun to write, than generic super strength. Pick the Conceptual or Space and time theme for the strangest results.

Give it exact limits and a real cost. Say how far it reaches, how long it lasts and what it cannot affect, then add a weakness a clever opponent could find and a price the hero pays each time. Every power this generator writes comes with all three.

Start from who they are. A shy barista and a retired firefighter should not get the same power, so type a line about your character and the generator builds the power, its cost and its origin around them.

Yes. Use them for a comic, a novel, a tabletop game, a roleplay or an OC, and change anything you like. Every power and name is invented for you, so check that a name does not clash with an existing hero before you publish.
