What makes a good superhero name

A hero name is a promise about the power. Ferrospine tells you the hero cannot be moved; Lumenwake tells you they are fast and leave light behind. The best ones are two or three syllables, easy to shout across a rooftop, and specific enough that a reader could guess the power before the first fight.

Most single words are taken. Comics have spent eighty years using names like Blink, Quake, Echo and Static, so this generator builds new compounds instead: a power word joined to an image (Bramblecast, Glintmark, Cinderveil). A compound reads as a name, not a dictionary word, and is much more likely to be yours alone.

Match the name to the hero

Think about who gave the hero the name. A name they chose for themselves sounds like a brand (Brightward, Truebeam). A name the press gave them sounds like a headline (Spirefall). A name from their crew sounds like a joke that stuck. Villains and anti-heroes suit darker images (Sablewake, Hollowlight); a team support hero suits gentler ones (Halcyonwire).

Then say it next to their real name. A secret identity of "Mira Okafor, also known as Glasswing" should sound like the same person in two different moods.

Hero names for OCs, games and stories

Type the power and a bit of personality above, like "a shy medic who heals by taking the wound herself", and the generator writes ten names that fit that hero. For a whole team, roll once per member and keep the names that sound like they belong together.

How this name generator works

Each roll asks an AI for ten original names in this style, written to fit your description if you give one, with what each name means or evokes, how to say it, and who it suits. Invented names get the image they call up rather than a made-up etymology; real names get their commonly cited meaning. The lists above were written the same way and checked by hand, and names borrowed from famous books, games and anime were removed. Need a story to go with the name? The backstory generator writes one, and our 160 OC ideas are a place to start.

Hero Name Generator FAQ

Start with the power, then add an image or a feeling: a hero who grows armor from plants could be Brambleguard. Keep it to two or three syllables, easy to shout, and check that it is not already a famous hero. Describe your hero above and the generator writes ten options.

The generator is told never to use names of Marvel, DC, anime or game heroes and villains, and our reviewed list removed any that slipped through. With thousands of comics out there, search a name before you publish it.

Yes. Describe the power, sometimes called a quirk, and the personality, and use the result as your OC’s hero name. The names are original, so they will not clash with existing characters.

Yes. Use them in campaigns, novels, roleplay and streams, and change them as you like. The names are invented for you rather than taken from published books or games, but search a name before you publish it in case someone already uses it.
