Below are 20 of the best visual novel games you can play in English, sorted the way people usually look for them: the all-time classics, free visual novels, mystery and horror, romance, fantasy, cozy picks, and visual novels on mobile or in a browser.

What is a visual novel?
Wikipedia calls the visual novel "a video game genre of Japanese origin focused on presenting a story." You move the story forward by clicking, tapping or pressing a button. The text sits in a box at the bottom of the screen (the ADV style) or fills most of it (the NVL style), over character sprites, backgrounds and music (Wikipedia).
Most visual novels branch. A choice, often a line of dialogue, can change who trusts you, which route you end up on and which ending you reach. A smaller group, called kinetic novels, has no choices at all and reads straight through. In Japan the genre is huge: Wikipedia says visual novels make up the majority of PC games produced and sold there, at around 500 releases a year.
A few words you'll see in visual novel reviews:
- Route: one storyline, usually tied to one character.
- CG: a full-screen illustration that unlocks at a big moment.
- Flowchart: a map of the story's branches that lets you jump back to a choice.
- Otome: a romance visual novel made for women. We have a separate list of the best otome games.
Best visual novels of all time
These six come up on almost every "best visual novels" list. All are paid, and all are on Steam.

| CLANNAD | PC (Steam) | $44.99 | VisualArts/Key | Overwhelmingly Positive | Slice of life and family drama |
Steins;Gate. A group of students turns a modified microwave into a way to send messages to the past, and gets pulled into a conspiracy around SERN, the organization behind the Large Hadron Collider. You play through the "phone trigger" system: you choose whether to answer calls and texts, and that changes the plot. The Steam page puts it at 30 to 50 hours of reading and lists multiple endings (Steam). A reboot, Steins;Gate RE:BOOT, came out on August 19, 2026, with new art, a redesigned cast and a new scenario, for $59.99 (Steam). Start with the original if you want the version everyone talks about.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy. You play defense attorney Phoenix Wright, fighting to save innocent clients in court by solving the mystery behind each case. This collection has all 14 episodes of the first three games, and Capcom says the series has sold over 6.7 million copies (Steam). It's also on iPhone and iPad (App Store) and Android (Google Play). It's the easiest place to start if you've never played a visual novel.
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. Makoto Naegi and his classmates are locked inside Hope's Peak Academy by Monokuma, a murderous little bear who promises freedom to anyone who can kill a classmate and get away with it. You investigate each case, then argue it out in a class trial by firing your classmates' words back at them (Steam). The mobile Anniversary Edition costs $15.99 on the App Store and Google Play, where it's rated Mature 17+.
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. Nine kidnapped people have to play a deadly "Nonary Game" run by a mastermind called Zero. The pack has two games: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999), remastered from the Nintendo DS, and its sequel Virtue's Last Reward. You solve escape-room puzzles between the story scenes, and both games have Japanese and English voice acting (Steam).
The House in Fata Morgana. You wake in a decaying mansion with no memory, and a maid walks you through the tragedies of the people who lived there, behind doors to 1603, 1707 and 1869. The Steam page calls it a gothic suspense tale "spanning nearly a millennium" that "deals in tragedy, human nature, and insanity" (Steam). It's dark: the iPhone version is rated 16+ for frequent mature themes. On phones it's only available with a Crunchyroll Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan membership (App Store, Google Play).
CLANNAD. Tomoya Okazaki, a guarded delinquent with an alcoholic, abusive father, meets Nagisa, who is repeating her senior year, and helps her bring back the school drama club. The Steam release has upgraded art and an English-only encyclopedia of Japanese terms called the Dangopedia (Steam). At $44.99 it's the priciest pick here, and it's a slow, character-driven school story rather than a mystery.
Free visual novels
All three of these cost nothing to download and play.

The store page warns that it "is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed," and it means it (Steam). With more than 229,000 reviews, it's one of the most-played visual novels on Steam. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is the paid $14.99 version, and its content notes list self-harm, suicide and suggestive sexual themes (Steam).
Everlasting Summer. Semyon falls asleep on a bus in winter and wakes up in the middle of summer, outside Sovyonok, a pioneer camp. To work out what happened, and whether he even wants to go back, he has to get to know the people at the camp (Steam). Its content note says some characters appear partly clothed and sex is mentioned a few times, with no explicit scenes.
Butterfly Soup. Its author describes it as "a visual novel about gay asian girls playing baseball and falling in love," about 3 to 4 hours long. It's free, and you can support it by buying a $5 bonus art PDF. It's rated 4.9 out of 5 from more than 4,000 ratings on itch.io. Its content warnings mention brief written depictions of parental emotional and physical abuse, with no visuals, and ableist slurs (itch.io).
For free romance visual novels on Steam, Cinderella Phenomenon, A Date with Death and Ballads at Midnight are covered in our otome games list.
Mystery and horror visual novels

A letter hidden in a book spine, drawn in Bellsworth's art style.
Mystery is where visual novels shine, because you're reading for clues anyway. Each of these has a killer or a curse to uncover, and three of them carry content warnings.

It comes from Kotaro Uchikoshi, the director of the Zero Escape series. Its content descriptors list blood and gore, intense violence, strong language and suggestive themes (Steam).
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo. A "Rite of Resurrection" sets people with the power to curse against each other in Tokyo's Sumida Ward in the late 20th century. The story follows several people looking into the Seven Mysteries of Honjo, a local ghost story, and you lead it to its conclusion (Steam). Steam marks it 17+ for violence and bloodshed. It's also on Switch, iOS and Android (official site), and costs $18.99 on the App Store.
Raging Loop. Haruaki Fusaishi arrives in Yasumizu, a mountain village trapped in mist, just as the villagers' "feast" begins: a werewolf hidden among them is out for revenge, and the villagers die one by one. When you die, you can rewind on a flowchart with a new clue that opens other paths. Its content note warns of cruel violence, abuse, murder and sexual situations, shown mildly in text or indirect art (Steam).
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Ryunosuke Naruhodo, an ancestor of Phoenix Wright, defends clients in late 19th-century Japan and England. This double pack has two games with five murder-mystery episodes each, and an assist feature for when you're stuck (Steam). Play it after the original trilogy.
Romance visual novels
CLANNAD and Butterfly Soup above are romances at heart. These two are lighter, and both let you choose who you fall for. For romance made for women, see our otome games list.
| Game | Platforms | Price | Developer | Steam reviews | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arcade Spirits | PC, Mac, Linux | $19.99 | Fiction Factory Games | Very Positive | Seven romance options, any pronouns |
| Hatoful Boyfriend | PC (Steam) | $9.99 | Mediatonic, Hato Moa | Very Positive | A dating sim where everyone else is a bird |
Arcade Spirits. In an alternate 20XX where the 1983 video game crash never happened, you start a new job at the Funplex arcade. You design your own character, pronouns included, and can build friendships or romance with seven characters (Steam).
Hatoful Boyfriend. You're the only human student at St. PigeoNation's Institute, a high school for birds, and you can date your classmates. This remake adds a new scenario and ending from creator Hato Moa (Steam). It plays as a joke, but the store page also promises genre-bending, intertwining storylines.
Fantasy visual novels
Magic duels, witches and a ghost in the woods. Two of these come from TYPE-MOON, the studio behind the Fate series.
| Game | Platforms | Price | Developer | Steam reviews | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fate/stay night REMASTERED | PC (Steam) | $29.99 | TYPE-MOON, fuzz | Overwhelmingly Positive | Where the Fate series began |
| Witch on the Holy Night | PC (Steam) | $39.99 | TYPE-MOON, Lasengle, Hunex | Overwhelmingly Positive | Two witches in the 1980s |
| Heart of the Woods | PC, Mac, Linux | $14.99 | Studio Élan | Very Positive | A fantasy romance with a ghost |
Fate/stay night REMASTERED. Seven magi summon heroes of legend, called Servants, and fight over the Holy Grail, which grants any wish. Shirou Emiya, a teenager who wants to be a "Hero of Justice," gets caught in the middle. This remaster of TYPE-MOON's first commercial game, from 2004, is the first official English release (Steam).
Witch on the Holy Night. In the late 1980s, a boy moves to the city and crosses paths with two young witches who live in a mansion on the hill. This 2023 remaster of TYPE-MOON's 2012 game adds full voice acting and full-HD visuals (Steam).
Heart of the Woods. Maddie runs her best friend Tara's paranormal video channel, and their last trip together takes them to the village of Eysenfeld, where Maddie meets Abigail, a ghost bound to the forest for more than 200 years. The developer calls it a fantasy yuri visual novel about "a love between two girls that transcends life and death." Its content note says all characters are adults and there's some strong language and suggestive content (Steam).
Cozy visual novels
Both of these give you something to do with your hands while people talk: you make drinks. In Coffee Talk, what you serve changes the story.
| Game | Platforms | Price | Developer | Steam reviews | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee Talk | PC, Mac | $12.99 | Toge Productions | Very Positive | A late-night café for elves and orcs |
| VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action | PC, Linux | $14.99 | Sukeban Games | Overwhelmingly Positive | Mixing drinks in a cyberpunk bar |
Coffee Talk. You run a coffee shop in an alternate Seattle where elves, orcs, mermaids and other fantasy races live alongside humans, and you listen to your customers' problems. The story branches on what you serve, not on dialogue choices (Steam).
VA-11 Hall-A. You're a bartender at a small downtown bar in a city run by corporations, and the regulars tell you their stories as you mix their drinks. Its content note says characters swear a lot and talk in detail about their sex lives, all in written dialogue (Steam).

Most free mobile story games are otome games, like Mystic Messenger and The Arcana. They're in our otome games list.
Visual novels you can play online
Almost every visual novel above is a download. If you want one that runs in a browser tab, you have three options:
- Butterfly Soup's web port. Its itch.io page links to a fan-made web version (itch.io).
- itch.io's browser games. The free visual novels on itch.io can be filtered to games that run in the browser. These are mostly short indie and game-jam visual novels, so read each page for content warnings first.
- An AI story game. These run in a browser by design. See the next section.
AI visual novels

Kota and Reika again, later the same day. In Mythx, the people you meet keep the same face from scene to scene.
An "AI visual novel" is a story game where an AI writes the scene after each thing you type, instead of a writer scripting every branch ahead of time. The appeal is freedom: you aren't limited to three menu choices. What you give up is everything a written visual novel is built around: a planned plot, real endings, CG galleries, voice acting and a twist the writer has been setting up for 20 hours.
Mythx, the AI roleplay game we make, is one of these. You arrive as a newcomer in one of 13 worlds, and the AI plays everyone you meet. The closest to a classic visual novel is Hoshimori, a Japanese hillside academy, where you might run into Reika Ogasawara, the student council president, or Kota Nishioka, who edits the academy paper and runs the lunchtime broadcast. For a mystery, Bellsworth is a Victorian London district of gas lamps, canals and a bookbinder's workshop.
It runs in your browser and on iOS and Android, and it's filtered, with no mature content. Free players get 10 scenes a day. The arrival scene and 3 bonus pictures are illustrated, and after that the story continues in text unless you go Premium. You can start for free in your browser with no sign-up.
If you'd rather write the setup yourself, the roleplay generator gives you a scenario and an opening line to play. Fans of "transported to another world" stories should read what is isekai, and our dere types guide explains the tsundere, kuudere and the rest of the anime character types visual novels love.
