Questner's $9.99 plan now stops at 3,000 messages a month, and new players get 40 free messages before a trial. Here are seven alternatives ranked for Questner players, set against Questner's own limits.

Prices are as of October 2026. "Not listed" means the product's public pages don't give it. We make Mythx AI, so weigh its row with that in mind.
Three details matter more than the headline numbers:
- What counts as a message. Friends & Fables only counts the game master's replies. "It does not matter how many messages you send to Franz," its pricing FAQ says.
- What carries over. Questner's monthly messages "refresh each billing cycle" and don't stack. Top-up packs (3,000 messages for $9.99) roll over for up to 12 months, per its FAQ. Old Greg's Tavern rolls over unused rounds.
- Who pays for friends. Both group options, F&F and Old Greg's, let invited friends play free and draw only on the host's allowance.

What pushes Questner players out
- Unlimited turned into a cap. Questner's FAQ explains the change: "We used to offer unlimited messages, but as the platform grew, unlimited usage at this price became difficult to support." Players who go for hours say a month's allowance can vanish in a few days.
- No free allowance that comes back. After the 40 messages and the trial, you subscribe or stop.
- Forgetting. The FAQ is candid that "the AI can sometimes forget details, repeat names, misunderstand rules, rush ahead, or become inconsistent." Items disappear from inventories and NPC names drift.
- Running ahead of you. The AI "may move too fast, ask and answer its own questions, or decide what your character does before you respond." A setting, "Limit AI to one response message," reins that in.
- Familiar plots. The library is community-built on shared models, and players notice the same towns, names and villains across different campaigns.
- Words in a browser. There are no pictures, and the FAQ's answer on an app is "Not yet."

AI Dungeon has run AI text adventures longer than anyone here, and its shelf of player-made scenarios is enormous. It has iPhone and Android apps too, and it's the closest match to Questner's browse-and-play habit.

- Cap: none on ordinary play, free or paid. Memberships from $14.99 a month add bigger models and longer context.
- Library: the largest here, in every genre.
2. Mythx AI: a free allowance that resets every day

AI Realm builds on the 5e SRD: classes, spells, skills and combat, run by an AI game master, plus three image generators. You add it to a phone's home screen from the browser.

4. Friends & Fables: turns, not messages
Friends & Fables runs full 5e with character sheets, spell slots and battlemaps, and its $39.95 plan seats six players. Only the host pays.

5. Old Greg's Tavern: when the campaign is a group night
Old Greg's Tavern is built for group nights. Bring as many as five friends at no cost to them, in a browser or the iOS and Android apps. It settles actions with dice rolls and skill checks of its own, so there's no rulebook to learn.

- Library: community worlds cover themes beyond the fantasy default.
6. Everweave: a free allowance every month
Everweave runs one D&D adventure format in a browser and in Android and iPhone apps. You choose a class, from fighter and paladin to warlock and monk, and the AI bends the quest to your choices.
It's a single style of adventure with no builder, which is the opposite of Questner's anything-goes shelf.
- Cap: free messages that refresh monthly; plans cost $5.99 to $54.99 a month.
- Library: one D&D format, with a handful of classes to play it with.
7. NovelAI: no game master to run ahead
Some Questner players find they wanted to steer every line. NovelAI is a writing space built for that. Its Lorebook and memory tools hold names and facts in place, and its anime-style image generation is strong.
There's no game master and no quests; you direct everything. That's the fix if the AI deciding for your character was the problem.
