7 Best Old Greg's Tavern Alternatives in 2026 (Free Options)

Most players leaving Old Greg's Tavern want to keep their group and stop counting rounds. These seven alternatives are ranked by fit, with what each means for the party and for whoever pays.
- Friends & Fables. Full D&D 5e for as many as six players, on a flat monthly fee the host covers.
- AI Realm. 5e SRD rules, a free tier, and room for you plus three friends on the right plan.

Who pays for a party of four
On Old Greg's Tavern, the host pays and up to five invited friends play free. Here's what the same four-person group looks like elsewhere.

How to read that table:
- Flat fees suit long nights. Paid F&F plans include unlimited standard turns, so a four-hour session costs the host the same as a short one.
- Rounds have perks too. Unused Old Greg's rounds roll over, and Legend subscribers pay $3.75 for 5 extra credits, against $5 on the one-time pack.
- A party of three can play F&F free. Its free plan seats three players, with a 25-turn daily limit.
- Mythx doesn't split. Four friends means four separate stories, each with its own free allowance or subscription.
Why groups move on from Old Greg's
- The free hour feels short. The homepage promises "your first hour is completely free, no credit card needed." Some Google Play reviewers in August and September 2026 say the paywall arrived after about ten turns.
- Rounds run out mid-campaign. A long night can burn through a month's rounds.
- Memory. In an April 2026 update the team wrote that "campaign memory has been the largest player pain point by far," and shipped a fix. Some reviewers still see NPC names and details drift.
- House rules. It runs its own system (stats, classes, XP, advantage and disadvantage), so 5e players relearn the edges.
- Portraits, not scenes. You get an AI portrait of your hero. One reviewer asks for art of NPCs, spells and locations too.
The seven, for the group and for the payer
1. Friends & Fables: the same deal, deeper rules
Friends & Fables handles money the way Old Greg's does: the host subscribes and invited friends play free. What changes is depth: real 5e character sheets, spell slots, battlemaps and a big world-building toolkit, with six seats on its $39.95 Legend plan.
For a group, the costs are a higher floor and no phone app. Big F&F updates are also on hold until 2027 while the studio works on Craft. Details are in our F&F roundup.
2. AI Realm: a smaller table that starts free
AI Realm is built on the 5e SRD, with 3D dice on a clickable character sheet and three image generators. Its free tier needs no card. A multiplayer game seats the host and three friends at most, depending on the host's plan.
For groups, two limits matter: group games always begin in Al'mundi, the house setting, and you can't download it from an app store yet. Memory leans on Notes that someone at the table has to keep current. Our AI Realm roundup goes deeper.
3. Mythx AI: a tavern of your own, played solo
Mythx AI is our product, so read this one with that in mind.
Old Greg's seats you in a tavern; the Hollow Lantern hands you one. A stranger's will leaves you a run-down Coppergate tavern with a debt due on Quarter Day.
Twelve regulars come with it, among them a half-orc doorman, a drow wizard, a tiefling rogue and a dwarf bookkeeper who counts everything. Fights stay small: a scuffle, a bruise, a retreat.

Premium paints every scene (as many as 100 daily) for a flat $9.99 a month, with no rounds to count (pricing). Free play gives 10 scenes a day: your arrival scene and the next three come illustrated, then free scenes continue in text.
The catch: it's single-player, so it can't host your group. It's also filtered, where Old Greg's is 18+ and allows darker, more violent stories.
4. RoleForge: dice the narrator can't lean on
If rolls that bent your way broke the spell, RoleForge puts the dice outside the AI's reach. Its site sums it up: "the AI tells the story, the dice tell the truth." A deterministic engine handles ability scores, saving throws and critical hits, and checks range and cover on tactical maps under fog of war.
Groups will have to wait. Play is solo, and co-op ("Bring your friends into the same living world") is still on the roadmap. It runs on the web as an alpha, and nobody pays while that lasts.
5. Everweave: a gentler free start on phones
Everweave shares Old Greg's best trait for casual players: real store apps on iOS and Android, plus the web. Choose a class and the AI adjusts quests, conversations and fights to you.
You play its adventure rather than host a table, and there's no builder. Its free messages refresh monthly, which outlasts a one-time hour; regulars outgrow them, and subscriptions run from $5.99 up to $54.99 monthly (October 2026).
6. AI Dungeon: no meter on ordinary play
AI Dungeon is the oldest name here, its library of player-made scenarios is vast, and it has native apps. Nobody counts rounds: ordinary play costs no credits, even on the free plan, and credits only buy extras like images.
The trade: no stats, dice or classes, so nothing keeps the story fair but you. Free accounts get a short 4k-token context, and paid plans with bigger models start at $14.99 a month. AI Dungeon alternatives covers its rivals.
7. Questner: browse a campaign instead of hosting one
Questner is a text-only game master with a community library. Players publish campaigns in every genre from cultivation to horror, and you can publish yours too.
Its meter is messages instead of rounds: 40 free, a 7-day trial, then $9.99 a month for 3,000. It has no native app, and its FAQ owns up to the AI forgetting details and rushing ahead. We compare its rivals in Questner alternatives.
