Why AI Realm players look around

• Memory is your job. The Player's Guide is blunt: "If it's not in your Notes, the AI will eventually forget it." Free accounts get 70,000 characters of Notes context, and each NPC card holds up to 30,000. Players in its subreddit still report names, quests and details drifting on long campaigns.

1. Friends & Fables: the deeper 5e table

Friends & Fables goes further into 5e than AI Realm: full character sheets with spell slots, battlemaps, and the richest world-building toolkit in the category. Parties reach six on its top plan, against AI Realm's four, and only the host pays.

Every F&F plan lists long-term memories, yet drift on long campaigns is still its community's top complaint. It also costs more: $19.95 to $39.95 a month, or 25 free turns a day.

2. RoleForge: the combat mode AI Realm hasn't shipped

AI Realm lists tabletop combat as a future update; RoleForge is built around it now. "Real dice. Real rulesets. Real consequences," its site says. An engine, not the narrator, settles saves, advantage, cover and crits on hand-drawn battle maps where the fog clears as you move.

It also keeps NPC relationships, faction standing and world state in "a real database," a different answer to the Notes tab. The limits: it's an alpha, solo for now and web only, and it's free until the alpha ends.

3. Mythx AI: memory you don't have to manage

Mythx swaps the sheet and the Notes tab for a world that tracks itself. You arrive as the newcomer, and the townsfolk go about their work, remember you, and keep one consistent face across scenes. Premium illustrates each scene automatically, to a cap of 100 a day, without a credit per picture.

4. Old Greg's Tavern: native apps for the group

Old Greg's Tavern has what AI Realm's roadmap is still working toward: native iOS and Android apps. The host pays, and as many as five friends tag along free.

For 5e players, the snag is a homegrown rule set, with the AI rolling the checks. After a free first hour the host buys rounds: $5 for 50 once, or 200 and 450 a month for $15 and $25.

5. Everweave: D&D classes on your phone

Everweave plays like a D&D module: pick a class (paladin, rogue, cleric and others), and the AI shapes quests and fights around it. You can play on Android, on iOS or in a browser.

There's far less to tinker with than in AI Realm: one adventure style, without custom worlds, custom sheets or a model menu. Free messages refresh monthly, and paid plans span $5.99 to $54.99 per month (October 2026).

6. AI Dungeon: out of D&D entirely

If AI Realm's cyberpunk and custom worlds still felt like a D&D table, AI Dungeon drops the rules. Its player-made scenarios span every genre, it has native apps, and ordinary turns are free of credits on every plan.

7. Questner: a shelf of campaigns, lighter on rules

Questner trades AI Realm's 5e scaffolding for a community library spanning isekai, cultivation, life-sim, tycoon and horror, with tools for publishing your own. Pick it if you'd rather choose a campaign than write a world.

AI Realm questions

Is AI Realm multiplayer? Yes, within limits. A group game seats you plus three friends at most, depending on your plan, and always uses Al'mundi. F&F and Old Greg's both seat six, and guests there play free.

Does AI Realm have an app? It installs to a phone's home screen from Safari or Chrome, and the roadmap lists an Android app in progress. Mythx AI, Old Greg's Tavern, Everweave and AI Dungeon have store apps.

What's the best free AI Realm alternative? RoleForge if you want rules, since its alpha is free. AI Dungeon if you never want ordinary turns metered. Everweave refreshes free messages monthly, and Mythx AI gives 10 scenes a day.

Before you switch, take your notes with you

Your Notes hold the campaign's memory, so copy these out first:

• Campaign Summary. AI Realm updates it roughly every eight messages, so it's the fastest way to brief a new game master.
• NPC Cards. The people your story depends on, up to 30,000 characters each. Paste the important ones into whatever context or world notes your next game offers.
• Character Data. Stats, inventory and backstory carry over most directly to Friends & Fables, the other 5e table on this list.

Mythx won't use any of it. There's no backstory field and the casts are fixed, so you'd start fresh as the newcomer.
