Two friends on the residence hall steps at Hartwell, drawn in the world's art style.
How two-person roleplay works without a GM
With no game master, you split the job. Each of you plays one main character. You also split the rest of the world: one of you voices the side characters on your half of the scene, like the shopkeeper you're talking to or the guard at your door.
Take turns setting scenes. One player says where the next scene starts and what's in the way, and the other reacts. Agree on the tone before you begin, such as funny, tense or cozy, and check in between scenes if it drifts.

Tips for roleplaying with a friend
- Over text: keep posts short, two to five sentences, so the scene moves. End each post with something your friend can react to, like a question or a door opening.
- On a call or in person: speak in character, but say "out of character" when you need to pause. Sound effects are encouraged.
- When you're stuck: introduce a problem. A knock, a storm, a message, someone new walking in.
- Rotate the lead: take turns choosing the next scene, so neither of you is always following.
- Keep notes: a shared document with names and places saves a lot of "wait, what was the innkeeper called?"

When your friend is offline: play solo with AI
When it's just you, an AI can play the other side. Mythx, the AI roleplay game we make, puts you in a small world as the newcomer and plays everyone you meet. In Hartwell, a college campus world, the people on your floor already have majors, jobs and opinions, and they remember what you talk about. It's free to start in your browser with no sign-up, and your first scenes come illustrated.
