By Nayan Dhabarde · Published October 11, 2026

Good Discord roleplay ideas give every player a reason to be in the same scene. These 42 roleplay ideas for Discord are built for groups. Each one says how many players it suits, which roles people can claim, and what the GM posts first. After the ideas come the practical parts: how to set up the channels, run turns and keep a server friendly.

For two-person ideas, see the roleplay ideas for friends. The main roleplay ideas list has 129 more starters you can adapt for a group.

Bigger groups need a reason to split up and come back together. Each of these has a home base and jobs that send people out.

  1. The tavern with a debt. Players are the staff and regulars of a run-down tavern that has a week to pay what it owes. Roles: barkeep, cook, doorman, bard, a fortune-teller, two adventurers, the noble collecting the debt. GM opens: "The note falls due in seven days. Somebody slid a map under the door last night."

  10. The film crew. A cast and crew shoot a low-budget horror film in a house that's actually haunted. Roles: director, lead actor, sound tech, makeup artist, the producer's nephew. GM opens: "Scene twelve, take three. The ghost is hitting its marks better than the actor."

Premises for an ongoing roleplay server

These are worlds for a server where people drop in and out over months. Each gives new players an easy way to arrive.

  1. The city of exiles. Everyone in the city was banished from somewhere. New characters arrive on the weekly ship.
  2. The academy with no graduates. A magic school that hasn't graduated a student in 300 years. New characters are the incoming class.
  3. The inn at the crossroads of worlds. Doors open onto different realities. New characters walk in through one.
  4. The kingdom after the dragon. The dragon that ruled for a century just died, and the realm is up for grabs. New characters are claimants or the people caught between them.
  5. The space station market. A neutral trading post where every faction has a booth. New characters dock with goods to sell.
  6. The small town that eats its tourists. A cozy town with one dark rule. New characters are visitors and new residents.
  7. The pirate archipelago. Island crews, a navy that wants them gone and a treasure map torn into pieces. New characters sign onto a crew.
  8. The post-apocalyptic mall. Survivors run a society inside an old shopping mall. New characters come in from the wasteland.
  9. The court of the four seasons. Four fae courts that each rule one season of the year. New characters are mortals who wandered in.
  10. The Victorian district. Gas lamps, a canal and a neighborhood full of secrets. New characters move into Bell Lane.

One-night Discord roleplay event ideas

Run these in one evening, with a start time and an end.

  1. The murder mystery dinner. Assign everyone a suspect role with a secret. The GM reveals one clue every half hour.
  2. The masquerade. Characters attend a masked ball where one guest is a vampire hunting a target. Everyone can lie about who they are.
  3. The trial. A character is on trial. Players are the judge, lawyers, witnesses and jury. The verdict comes at the end of the night.
  4. The last night on Earth. A comet hits at dawn. Characters spend their final night however they want.
  5. The talent show. A fantasy town's talent show, where every act is magical and one is cheating. Players vote on the winner.
  6. The haunted house tour. A tour group enters a haunted house, and the GM removes one character every round until one is left.

Group roleplay ideas with no GM

These run on rules everyone agrees to, so nobody has to run the world.

  1. The pass-the-scene story. Each player writes one post that must end with a problem for the next player to solve.
  2. The shared house. Roommates share a house, and each player controls one room and everything in it.
  3. The letters game. Characters only interact through letters posted in a channel, one letter per day.
  4. The council vote. Each player leads a faction. Every round, one player proposes a law, and everyone votes in character.
  5. The map game. Players take turns adding one place to a shared map and one rumor about it. When the map is full, everyone explores.
  6. The prompt jar. Everyone writes three prompts into a pinned message. Each round, a bot or a volunteer picks one, and the group plays it.

How to set up a Discord roleplay server

A tidy server makes it easier for new players to find the scene. This layout works for most groups.

Channel What it's for Discord feature to use
#rules Rating, limits and how turns work Read-only through channel permissions
#characters One post per character, with a picture and a short bio A forum channel, so each character is its own post
#lore World notes, maps and factions Read-only, pinned messages
#ic-main The main in-character scene Slowmode to pace posts
Side scenes Two or three characters splitting off Threads off #ic-main
#ooc Out-of-character chat, scheduling, jokes A normal text channel

A few Discord features do most of the work:

  • Roles and channel permissions. Give players a role, such as Player or GM, and set which channels each role can see or post in (Discord: Channel Permissions 101).
  • Forum channels. A forum channel holds posts instead of a single stream of messages, which suits character sheets (Discord: Forum Channels FAQ).
  • Threads. A thread is a side conversation that branches off a channel, so a small scene doesn't bury the main one (Discord: Threads FAQ).
  • Slowmode. Slowmode sets a cooldown between each member's messages in a channel, which stops the fastest typist from taking over (Discord: Slowmode FAQ).

How to run turns in a group roleplay

Group scenes stall when nobody knows whose turn it is. Pick one system and write it in #rules.

  1. Round robin. Players post in a fixed order. It's fair, but one slow player can hold everyone up.
  2. Popcorn. Anyone can post, but you can't post twice in a row. It's fast and works well in live sessions.
  3. GM rounds. The GM posts, every player replies once, and then the GM posts again. This is the easiest for big groups.

Whatever you pick, add a time limit. A common rule is that if a player hasn't posted within 24 hours, the GM moves on and the character "stays quiet" that round. Write a short recap at the start of each session so players who missed a day can catch up.

The GM's main job is the spotlight. Watch who hasn't had a moment in a while and give their character a problem only they can solve.

Rules and safety for Discord roleplay

Most servers that last have a few clear rules posted before anyone plays.

  • A content rating. Say what's allowed, such as violence, romance or horror, and how far it can go. Mark any channel that goes further.
  • Lines and veils. A line is something that never appears in the story. A veil is something that can happen off-screen, with a fade or a time skip.
  • A pause word. Anyone can post a word, like "pause," to stop a scene and talk out of character, with no questions asked.
  • No control over others' characters. You decide what your character does, never what someone else's does or feels.
  • Keep OOC out of IC. Out-of-character comments go in #ooc or in brackets, so the scene stays readable.
  • Moderators. Name who enforces the rules and how to reach them.

Discord roleplay terms

Practice solo or with one partner

Not every night has a full group. For two players, our roleplay ideas for friends are scenes that need no GM. For a character to bring to a new server, start with the OC ideas or the writing prompts.

To practice a character's voice on your own, an AI can play the rest of the cast. Mythx, the AI roleplay game we make, is single-player, so it isn't a way to run your server. It's a way to play between sessions. You arrive as a newcomer in a small world, such as a tavern with a debt in the Hollow Lantern, and the AI plays everyone there. It's free to start in your browser with no sign-up, and your first scenes come illustrated.

For a fast idea when the group can't decide, the roleplay generator picks a role, a relationship and a tension in one click.

Discord roleplay FAQ

What is Discord roleplay? Collaborative storytelling in a Discord server. Players write as their characters in text channels, usually with a GM who runs the world and a set of rules for turns and content.

What is a good group roleplay idea? One with a shared home base and a clear problem, like a tavern with a week to pay its debt. Every player needs a role that gives them a reason to care about the problem.

How many players should a Discord roleplay have? Three to five is the easiest to run with one GM. Larger groups work better with GM rounds, side scenes in threads and a recap each session.

How do I start a roleplay server? Set up channels for rules, characters, lore, in-character scenes and out-of-character chat. Post a short premise, a content rating and a turn system before you invite players.

Can you roleplay on Discord with AI? Some servers add AI bots that play characters. If you want to play solo with an AI instead of a group, a single-player game such as Mythx lets the AI play every other character.
