Janitor AI Alternatives: 7 Picks Ranked by Fit (2026)
By Nayan Dhabarde · Published October 11, 2026
If you like Janitor AI's community bots but want something else, SpicyChat is the closest swap, Chub suits people who use their own model, and SillyTavern gives you full control. The list below ranks seven alternatives by how well they fit a typical Janitor user, and we checked every fact at the source in October 2026.
One thing up front: entry #7, Mythx, is the app we make, and it is SFW. It's filtered and has no mature setting. If you came to Janitor for unfiltered or adult character chat, Mythx won't give you that; picks #1 to #3 are the ones built for it.
Why people look past Janitor AI
Janitor's core is still free. When it launched the optional Janitor+ plan in June 2026, the team wrote that the regular version "stays completely free." People who go looking for something else usually have one of these reasons:
- The phone apps start locked down. Janitor's iOS and Android apps open in Safe Mode, with adult content off until you change a setting on the website.
- Memory costs extra. Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month, and its headline feature is five times more chat context.
- Age checks in some countries. Players connecting from Australia, Brazil or the UK must pass a one-time age verification through k-ID.
- It's adults only. Janitor's own help center says its services are "exclusively intended for an audience above the age of 18," so younger players need somewhere else.
- Bots vary. Everything is community-made, so a great bot and a broken one sit side by side.
Quick picks
- Same idea, fewest limits: SpicyChat.
- A giant card library plus a model you choose: Chub AI.
- Your own model, your own rules: SillyTavern.
- The most polished mainstream app: Character.AI.
- Bots in a phone feed: Chai.
- Text adventures instead of chats: AI Dungeon.
- A story world with pictures, SFW: Mythx.
The 7 alternatives
1. SpicyChat
Best for: adults who want Janitor's format with adult bots allowed · Free: yes · Platforms: web, Android APK
SpicyChat is the nearest thing to Janitor: a site full of user-made chatbots, a chat window and very few rules. Its docs promise core features that "remain accessible to everyone, free of charge." Its community guidelines require users to be 18 or older and ask creators to mark explicit bots as NSFW.
Paid tiers fund the site. After the September 2026 price update they cost $5.95 (Get A Taste), $19.95 (True Supporter) and $29.95 (I'm All In) a month. There's no App Store app; the mobile page points iPhone users to a home-screen shortcut and Android users to an APK on SpicyChat's own site.
2. Chub AI
Best for: card collectors and people who already run a proxy · Cost: your own API key, or Mars at $20 a month · Platforms: web
Chub is a huge library of community character cards with its own chat on top. Its docs describe the platform as "uncensored." You can connect the same kinds of keys Janitor's proxy users know, including OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter and self-hosted models, according to its API connections page.
If you'd rather not manage keys, Chub sells its own Mars models, which the same page lists at $20 a month with unlimited messaging. The cards travel, too: SillyTavern (pick #3) can pull characters straight from Chub.
3. SillyTavern
Best for: tinkerers who want total control · Free: yes, open source · Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, Docker
SillyTavern calls itself "a locally installed user interface", has install guides for each platform, and is released under the AGPL-3.0 license. It has no model of its own: the docs say it is "only an interface," so you plug in an API or a model on your own machine. That also means the model you connect decides what it will and won't write.
Setup takes an afternoon. In return you get lorebooks, group chats, character card imports and detailed sampler settings. If you already paste an OpenRouter key into Janitor, this is where that habit leads.
4. Character.AI
Best for: polish and a giant library, without adult content · Free: yes · Platforms: web, iOS, Android
Character.AI is where many Janitor users started, and it's still the smoothest app of the seven. Its Google Play listing pitches "Chat, call, text" with countless community characters, and the App Store listing sells Character.AI+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year.
It moderates content (its safety page covers its moderation and teen tools), so it won't replace Janitor for adult chats. Under-18s lost open-ended chat in late 2025: the company said it would remove it "no later than November 25".
5. Chai
Best for: quick bot chats on your phone · Free: yes, with ads (Google Play) · Platforms: iOS, Android
Chai is a phone app with a scrolling feed of community bots. Its safety page calls it "an 18+ service" and says its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, with optional filters for mature search results. The App Store listing sells Premium at $13.99 a month and Ultra at $29.99 a month.
6. AI Dungeon
Best for: turning chats into adventures · Free: yes, no ads · Platforms: web, iOS, Android
AI Dungeon narrates whatever you type, so it suits people who used Janitor bots as scenario runners. Its App Store listing promises free play with "no ads" and sells memberships starting at $9.99. The AI safety settings offer Safe, Moderate and Mature, and you must confirm you're 18+ to turn Mature on. Its terms allow players from 13.
7. Mythx
Best for: a story world with pictures, SFW · Free: 10 scenes a day · Platforms: web, iOS, Android
Mythx is a single-player AI roleplay game, so it plays differently from a bot site. You arrive as the newcomer in one of 13 hand-built worlds, the AI plays everyone you meet, and the people there keep their jobs, routines and memories of you. You can design your own hero's look; there's no library of user-made bots to chat with one-on-one.
Miles the barista and June the painting student in Hartwell, Mythx's college town: the Percolator in the afternoon, the diner on College Ave after dark. Their faces and clothes stay the same from scene to scene.
Free play includes 10 scenes a day, and you can start in your browser with no sign-up. Your first scenes come illustrated; after that, free scenes continue in text. Premium costs $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year for unlimited story and 100 illustrated scenes a day.
Where it falls short for Janitor users: Mythx is filtered with no mature setting, it has no voice, and it's single-player. Players must be 13 or older, with a parent's or guardian's consent for minors.
Also worth a look
- Nomi. One companion instead of a bot library. Its site says it's free to start with no credit card, that the AI should "remain unfiltered and uncensored," and that you can trade voice messages or call. Its terms bar anyone under 18.
- Kindroid. An AI companion with voice messages and calls. New accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages (15 in some regions), and voice calls come with a subscription, per its subscription docs.
- PolyBuzz and Talkie. Phone-first character apps with voiced characters. We compare them in our PolyBuzz alternatives guide.
