The Shifting Streets
A cartographer must chart a city that rearranges itself each night, or the king will raze it to claim its magic.
- Protagonist
- Ivo Renard, a meticulous royal cartographer whose maps are his only truth, but he clings to fixed patterns and refuses to see that change can be useful.
- Antagonist
- King Aldric, who wants to seize the city's shifting power for his war, and will destroy it if he cannot control it.
- Setting
- The city of Lumen, which rebuilds itself every night under twin moons, in a kingdom where magic is fading.
- Stakes
- If Ivo fails, Lumen will be burned, its people scattered, and its unique magic lost forever.
- 1
Opening
Ivo Renard arrives in Lumen with orders to produce a definitive map for the king. He is confident in his craft, but at dawn he finds his first map useless because the streets have moved overnight.
- 2
Inciting incident
Ivo meets Nessa, a soup vendor who navigates by memory and instinct. She shows him that the city's shifts follow a hidden logic, and he realizes his rigid methods will never capture it.
- 3
Midpoint
Ivo discovers that the city rearranges itself around a central, unmoving monument that he had dismissed as a ruin. He tries to map from there, but the king's soldiers arrive and demand his progress.
- 4
Crisis
Ivo's latest map is seized, and the king orders the monument destroyed to freeze the city. Nessa reveals she is the city's last living anchor, bound to the monument, and its destruction will kill her.
- 5
Climax
Ivo chooses to abandon his royal commission and redraw the map as a living guide that changes with the city, tricking the king into thinking the magic is gone. Lumen survives, but Ivo is branded a traitor and becomes a fugitive with Nessa.
The twist
The monument does not anchor the city; Nessa does, and the city's shifting is her unconscious attempt to hide the monument from those who would abuse its power.
